INSIGHTS & GUIDES

Choose a neighbourhood around your everyday life

By Sherwin Lee · · All guides

Choosing an area is also choosing the setting for your everyday routine. Start with the places, journeys and habits that will shape your week.

Map your regular journeys.

Mark where you expect to work, study, shop and spend time. Consider who will make each journey and how they prefer to travel. Rather than comparing distance alone, investigate the complete route, including the walk to an entrance and the return journey.

Look beyond a landmark.

A well-known building or destination can help you recognise an area, but it does not describe every street around it. Look at the surroundings of the particular project you are considering. Explore the routes you would use instead of assuming the experience is the same throughout the neighbourhood.

Consider your preferred pace.

Think about how much activity you enjoy around your home. Notice the sound, street activity and feel of the area when you visit. If possible, compare a weekday with a weekend and a daytime visit with an evening visit.

Make the search work for your household.

Different members of a household may have different priorities. Discuss access, personal space and the places each person uses regularly. A location that suits one commute may create a difficult routine for someone else.

Compare two or three areas.

Write a short note for each area: what appeals to you, what you have checked and what remains uncertain. This makes the next conversation more specific and helps avoid choosing solely on a first impression.

If you are still overseas, share the places you expect to use and your preferred pace of life. That gives your area discussion a useful starting point before you visit.
